Summary: Arnie J. sends Nance a picture he took at Rossville Harbor.

The picture actually came out fairly good, considering that he'd only taken one shot.  Typically, when he took pictures he eventually wanted to add to the albums, he shot quite a few so he could keep the best one.  But for a one-time only photo, it came out nice.

Nance and Mike were climbing the bow, and Rick was hanging back, and the colors were fairly sharp in the low evening sunlight.  Greens and browns, and rust red, and a few shades of dusky blues and violets... for a picture taken in a harbor of derelict boats, it was rather vibrant.

"So that's where you were Saturday," Doug said, looking at the picture on the screen. "Don't tell me you're actually getting that life we all suggested you get."

Arnie shook his head to himself with a wry grin. "No.  Rumours of me getting a life have been greatly exaggerated."

"Cute."

"But I will need Thursday off."

Doug leaned against the computer desk, crossing his arms. "Go ahead.  You've got enough vacation and sick time saved up, you can take a year off.  Why not take Friday and Saturday off while you're at it?"

This was an ongoing debate.  Contrary to what most people believed, Doug Mitchell was not a slave driver.  In fact, he usually had to badger his star pressman to take time off work.  It was an odd thing when an employee spent more time at the business than the owner did.

Rarely did he win the debate.  Even though the Allied contract stated firmly that Arnie was due two days off a week, plus overtime, he never turned in his overtime hours and it was a miracle when he took more than one day off in a week.  Doug had a feeling that if he hadn't been adamant, Arnie'd spend seven days a week, sixteen hours a day in the shop working.  And while it was admirable that someone could be that dedicated to a profession, it was just a little on the extreme side.

"No, just Thursday.  I have a few obligations to attend to."

"Just get the letterpress stuff out of the way, and you can take off however long you want to."  Doug looked at the picture again. "Go hang out with your friends."

"They aren't my friends.  Well, they are, but they aren't."  Arnie crossed his arms and leaned back in the chair. "I hardly know them."

"And I'll bet you've just fallen all over yourself to get to know 'em, too," Doug said, raising an eyebrow.

"They crashed my apartment for days on end," Arnie pointed out. "That doesn't exactly foster feelings of good will."

"And?"

"And then they left."

"Just like that?"

"Just like that."

Doug rubbed his eyes.  "So, you've got friends willing to go to Bay Ridge to hang out with you, and you decide that rather'n go out and have fun like any normal human being, you'd rather hide at work?"

Arnie tilted his head and pretended to think about it.  Then he looked back at Doug and nodded. "Yes, that's it exactly."  And that said without any remorse.

Doug just shook his head.  They'd had some variation on the 'get a life' conversation more than a few times over the years.  And so far, there just didn't seem to be much hope.  It had taken three years of working steadily under the same roof before they even had a non-work conversation.  He thought that maybe, in another four or five years, his advice might possibly be taken.  Maybe.

"I'll be able to finish the letterpress work by tomorrow evening."

"No doubt."  Doug stood up from his lean. "Well, at least try to have a good time, okay?  And if you do feel like taking Friday or any other time off, just do it.  We'll survive."

Arnie attached the picture to an e-mail, along with the one he'd scanned of Rick getting attacked by gulls, and just nodded.  It was an 'in one and out the other' suggestion, and they both knew it.

Thought you might want a copy of these two.  I'll send the hard copies when I get a chance.
