Fic - Desperation

Title: Desperation

Universe: Home
Timeline: December 31, 2005
Written: December 31, 2005
Summary: After the ambush, and half the ShadowKnights going missing (who are still missing), Mike and Lorna try to survive by sticking together.

It's a strange thing to find yourself laying next to someone that you wouldn't have expected to end up next to.  Lorna wasn't nearly as physical as a lot of the ShadowKnights were towards each other; she slept next to Clay, and didn't intrude upon anyone else.  The fact that she was willing to room with Mike for a night was unprecedented.

But... it was better than sleeping in her bed.  Better than reaching for Clay in the dark and not finding him there.

She had grabbed her own pillow and blanket, once she made sure Mike was done with his heroic performance of the evening, and flopped down on the other side of the bed.  It wasn't as warm in there as she was used to, given Clay's inability to produce much in the way of body heat.

And it was so quiet.

"What're we gonna do?"

It was disconcerting to hear that plaintive note in Mike's voice, even though he tried to hide it.  And she knew that no answer she could give would be any comfort.  That made it even harder.  Finally, though, she replied, "I don't know.  Wake up tomorrow, drink some coffee, keep looking."

It was better than a lie.  And he knew it, too.  "...I'm sorry."

"Me too."  She took a breath, looking up at the dark ceiling.  "We've gone through so much material, and still nothing."

"Maybe tomorrow," he offered, taking his turn in trying to at least find words.

"Maybe," Lorna echoed, crossing her arms to try to warm up.

There was a long silence.  It somehow seemed unfair; that when things were going wrong, something else kicked them while they were down, leaving them to bleed in the dark.  How long they would be able to keep each other afloat was impossible to guess.

She prayed in her mind, and knew Mike was doing the same.  It was all they had right now.

Once the silence had already lasted far too long, he finally said, "Night, Lorna."

She barely whispered in reply, "Night, Mike."

Maybe tomorrow.
