Title: Evolution of a Relationship: Moments
Rating: PG
Universe: Alternate Universe
Timeline: Winter, 2006.
Written: February, 2008.
Summary: After part of their party was ambushed and almost killed, Shayna finds herself awake at night and reflects on why she'll never have to go to bed alone again.

Shayna awoke with a gasp.

It took a good moment to allow her eyes to adjust to the darkness. The fire had long since died out, leaving only the cold light from the stars to illuminate the camp. The milky glow created twisting shadows that reached into the camp, none of which honestly bothered the woman. The shapes clearly had a natural, plant like form to them and she felt more at home among them than she ever felt back in her old shack at Near Bend.

Satisfied that whatever startled her was only in her dream, Shayna settled back into the bedroll, knocking up again something – someone – warm and soft. Rick didn't move; they hadn't had time to have a proper rest over the past two or three days and it didn't surprise Shayna that a little jostle didn't wake him up. She quietly slipped deeper into the bedroll, trying to get into a warm and comfortable spot without disturbing her partner.

They hadn't slept together before tonight; this wasn't to say that they hadn't slept together in an innuendo laden sense. Back at Near Bend that was very much not the case. But, when the fun was over, Rick would eventually excuse himself to his own bed across the room. Even the times she fell asleep in his arms ended with her waking up alone the next morning.

Such things were probably courteous gestures towards Nancy and a settlement environment that generally did not lend itself well to sexual recreational activities. As frustrating as it was to have an empty bed afterwards, she had to give Rick credit for thinking beyond his own gratification.

She also knew why that thinking had changed tonight.

It was Rick who put forth the excuse that the nights had been getting colder and it was only simply a means for survival. The others agreed, but they weren't there with him when the lone horse appeared on the trail. For a fleeting moment, before Mike called out, Shayna had caught a glimpse of Rick's expression as he reached for a bow and dropped the brave face he had been holding up for the kids. It was something she never wanted to see again.

Rick still hadn't moved from his spot in the bedroll. Seizing the moment, Shayna wrapped her arms tightly around him and pulled closer, resting her head against his chest. The rhythmic movement from the breathing didn't bother her at all. In light of their escape and the following ambush, it was reassuring.
