Title: Eve's End
Rating: PG
Universe: Alternate Universe
Timeline: Halloween, 2006.
Written: Halloween, 2006.
Summary: Rick and Shayna attempt to relax after Halloween. I'm not too fond of this and I think I covered the same material much better in a later fic. Based on the prompt "Candy Woes"

Halloween night was drawing to a close in Missoula. Rick quietly crept down the stairs inside the Nelson cabin, saying a final good night to the kids. Joel had to have gone to his bedroom by now and the lumpy form on the couch made it clear that Mike had crashed for the night. All was quiet now as he slipped into his own bedroom.

Apparently, Shayna had been busy since he left the room earlier. A small, but cozy fire was going in the fireplace, with Shayna relaxing close by on a wool blanket. That was as good of an invitation as any.

“I'm so beat... hey, look! A pillow,” Rick joked as he lay down beside Shayna and rested his head in her lap.

“Look, an uninvited guest,” Shayna replied with a chuckle. “How many houses did you get dragged to tonight?”

“To be honest, I lost count after we cleared the main part of town and started heading to homes more on the house,” Rick explained. “I'll be feeling it tomorrow morning.”

Shayna thought this over for a second, as if she was trying to remember all the homesteads she knew about. “There can't be that many of them all the way out there.”

"Probably not,” Rick said with a slight shrug. “But, I was less focused on candy and protecting the kids from stray monsters and mutants.”

The woman let out a honest gasp. “You didn't tell me there were...”

“Oh, no!” Rick quickly clarified. “No, no, no. Nothing other than Mike abusing his guard wolf shtick to scare the kids that walked by us. You know how kids are, though. All it takes is the shadow of a rabbit to set them off. By the end, though, Nance was using it as an excuse to be carried home. She said that if anyone came after us from behind, I could run away faster. I think her legs were just tired.”

The response was met with a chuckle. “The robots must have run the other four of you into the ground.”

“Tom doesn't have any legs, remember? No arms either, so we had carry his bags for him.” Rick slowly closed his eyes, taking in the warmth from the fire. “How did you and Gypsy do back here?”

“The kids that made it out here seemed happy with the cookies. I think next year I might give out treats closer to town. We still have quite a bit left over.”

“Leftovers for sharing?”

“This coming from the person that told the kids to wait until tomorrow morning to eat the bulk of their treats? I think you can wait a little.”

“But it seems so long...”

Shayna smiled wickedly to herself for a brief moment. “Say, it's probably still Halloween for at least a few more minutes,” she said, pullings softly on a few strands of Rick's hair and giving her best b-movie damsel-in-distress voice. “There's still a chance that some big, scary, ghostly tracker could storm in right in here, ready to collect our souls for the bounty.”

Rick lazily opened one eye. “I don't know if I'm strong enough to hold him off, Shayna,” he struggled to say without laughing. “Maybe he'll leave us alone if we can provide him with enough of a distraction. At least, until midnight rolls around and he poofs back into nonexistence.”

“All the way to midnight?” Shayna gave a sharp grin as she looked down at Rick and leaned in slightly. “Is that a challenge?”

A crisp, sharp howl cut through the dark night. Startled, the couple scrambled to their feet and, somehow in a mess of limbs and blanket, managed to dart across the room. They quivered together in each other's arms, pressed up against the far corner. Over by the window, the viscous growls of the monster echoed into the night.

---

Outside of the window, a large timber wolf also known as Mike panted happily to himself. Maybe the lovebirds would take a hint this time. Being scared shitless usually worked better than a cold shower... not that he would know from experience.
