Soliloquy - Days
Title: Days
Rating: G
Universe: Home
Timeline: November 8, 2005
Written: November 8, 2005
Summary: After proposing to Kitty on the night before, Mike looks back over their lives together. One of my favorites.
[It's a beautiful day. Sure, it's overcast and the trees are pretty much bare, and it looks and smells like rain, but it's a beautiful day.]
[So, Mike wanders around the Estate. He's on cloud nine. It takes ever ounce of common sense he has not to run into Salem Center, climb to the top of the water tower and sing out to the world, "Hey, I'm engaged to the woman I love!" Though, really, pretty much everyone has heard the news by now.]
[That would be the reason that, sitting all through the livingroom and kitchen are about a million congratulation gifts, ranging from flowers to champagne, to candles to pictures (mostly of Kitty from her earlier days), to a few leather bound blank scrap books... well, there are a lot of 'em. They started arriving at the torturous hour of six in the morning and still haven't stopped -- Crow and Tom are busy signing for 'em and finding places to put 'em. Just about all of them come with cards with similar sentiments: "It's about damn time!"]
[Some sadist over at the X-Mansion called Mike's Mom and informed her; he recruited poor Joel to field the calls that starting coming from her at seven in the morning. Then the inventor had to field the calls from Kitty's mother. Finally, sometime around noon, the Dads managed to convince their wives to leave the kiddies alone.]
[It's a whole lot of hoopla. So, once he just couldn't take any more well-wishing and mild chastising anymore, Mike beat a retreat.]
[Which leaves him, finally, sitting on the dock. And even though it's a gray day in November, five years later, he closes his eyes and he can feel the sun, and look under the bill of his John Deere hat and he knows he'd find her leaning against the other side. There would be a bag of Oreos, and a fishing pole and they would be fishing without a hook in a lake with only one mythical fish that only eats cookies.]
[There are moments which span the years; the creation of something stronger than time, even stronger than the fabric of the universe itself. So, maybe in that sense, it was 'about damn time'.]
[Day two hundred and five... he paints their initials in the snow, large enough to attract the media's attention.]
[Day one hundred and ninety-five... they finally officially become a couple.]
[Day one hundred and fifty-four... they go on their first date.]
[Day ninety-nine, and they snub the universal law of paradoxes and find their way back together.]
[Day eighty-nine, they kiss for the first time.]
[Day thirty-nine, he goes to battle and brings her home... day forty-five, she returns the favor.]
[Day thirty-seven, they fall asleep together in a field covered with fireflies.]
[Day fourteen, and they sit on the steps and talk until dawn.]
[Day ten, they exchange their chains... the first promise made.]
[Day three... they sit on the dock and dream.]
